Community Engagement: Building Trust for Better Health Data

The success of any population-based survey depends on strong community engagement and trust. For UPHIA 2024-2025, we have prioritized building relationships with communities across Uganda to ensure meaningful participation and accurate data collection.

Our community engagement strategy recognizes that collecting sensitive health information requires careful preparation and ongoing dialogue with community members. We have worked closely with local leaders, health committees, and community organizations to introduce UPHIA and address any concerns.

Community engagement activities include:

  • Meetings with district and community leaders
  • Information sessions at community gatherings
  • Radio announcements in local languages
  • Distribution of informational materials
  • Engagement with local health facilities
  • Collaboration with community health workers

These efforts have been led by our Community Liaison Officers, who work closely with survey teams to ensure culturally appropriate approaches in each community. The response from communities has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the transparency and respect shown by the UPHIA team.

"Community trust is not something we can take for granted," explains Sarah Namukwaya, Community Engagement Coordinator. "We must earn it through consistent, respectful engagement and by demonstrating how this research will benefit communities."

Early indicators suggest that our community engagement efforts are paying off, with high participation rates in the initial survey areas. This strong community support is essential for generating representative data that will inform evidence-based policies and programs.

We remain committed to maintaining open communication with all communities throughout the survey period and beyond, as we work together to improve health outcomes for all Ugandans.
