UPHIA Health Survey Lights Up in Buvuma District with Vital Health Services

The Uganda Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (UPHIA) monitoring team has intensified its nationwide health data collection campaign, with activities currently underway in Buvuma District.

The monitoring team traveled from Kampala through Katosi landing site to Buvuma to monitor and inspect how UPHIA field teams are conducting the survey on the island. At the site, Teams 33 and 34 were found actively engaging households and collecting critical health data on HIV prevalence and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.

Dr. David Okimait, the UPHIA Survey Coordinator, commended the progress of the exercise in Buvuma, stressing that accuracy and quality are paramount in this nationwide survey. "We encourage the public to warmly welcome our survey teams into their homes. The information we gather will guide government in improving health services and ensuring a healthier Uganda," he said.

Community members in Lwanjje expressed appreciation to government for bringing the services closer to them, saying the initiative has come at the right time as it helps them know their health status.

Team Leader Tumusiime Prossy of UPHIA Team 34 reported a massive community turnout, encouraging residents to continue embracing the exercise. "This survey is for the people's benefit. Early knowledge of one's health condition is key to timely care and treatment. We call upon everyone to participate fully," she added.

The Ministry of Health has deployed 37 UPHIA survey teams nationwide, making this one of the most comprehensive health data collection exercises in the country. The findings will provide government with vital evidence on HIV prevalence and the growing burden of NCDs, shaping policies that directly improve the lives of Ugandans.
